A fitting end to the Well Spring Series
Spirit Bridge is the third and final book of the Well Spring series. I strongly recommend starting with Soul’s Gate and also reading Memory’s Door. You could follow the story of Spirit Bridge without the other two, but they are so good, you should read them.
The book was an incredibly fast read. Rubart has a way of transporting you into his world even as his characters do truly extraordinary things. I feel like I’ve come to know Reece, Dana, Marcus, and Brandon so well over the course of the series.
My favorite character is Brandon. While I’m not a musician, I identified strongly with his struggle against the spirit of Worthlessness. I also identified with Marcus. I’m nowhere near as smart as he is, but I’ve always liked the brainy type of characters.
There are some beautiful callbacks to the early books of the series. We return to the field of doors, and revisit the soul travel that dominated Soul’s Gate. Simon, who was such a big part of Memory’s Door, returns for Spirit Bridge and has a major role to play.
I love the new character, Miyo. She has to find a way to integrate herself into the established team, and her conflict with Reece felt real and believable.
There’s a passage from the later part of the book that I’d like to leave you with. It contains no spoilers, but it is a passage I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.
The most potent attack of the enemy will always come against our identity. He does not want us to know who we are. He does not want us to know our talent, our true heart’s desire, our destiny, our path. For if we know these things and live out of them with passion, we become extremely dangerous to him. If we live in our true, free, Spirit-infused identity, he will do everything possible to thwart our realization of that knowledge.
Once we discover our glory, our gifting, our calling, the evil one will seek to cloud it like a dark fog, to taint it, spin it, twist it to such a degree that we forget who we are and become only a shadow of what the Lord has made us to be. He will lead us back into captivity, back into who we were before we stepped into the freedom and power of our true self.
He will tempt us to question who we are. To doubt what God has spoken of. It is the attack he pursued against the Son during his time of fasting in the desert. “If you are Son of the Go, tell these stone to become bread”… Then the devil took hi to the hold city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God”, he said, “throw yourself down.”
If you are loved unconditionally, irrevocably, by the great I Am. If you have the power and strength and courage to carry out your destiny.
Lies. Because there is no “if” in the kingdom of the One. Know who you are. Know who you are. you must know who you are!
Spirit Bridge by James Rubart
Spirit Bridge is a story that left uncomfortable questions for me to deal with and I so thank Mr. Rubart for that. Am I living out my true identity? Am I living as a dead man? Ted Atchley is dead. (That was a weird sentence to type). Christ in Ted is more alive than he has ever been. But am I living that truth and that freedom?
