Divine Summons: A Soaring Fantasy Adventure with a Divine Twist

You’re in for a treat with this review of Rebecca P. Minor’s Divine Summons! “Reluctant dragon riders? Sign me up!” That was my exact thought diving into Rebecca P. Minor’s Divine Summons, and let me tell you, this book absolutely delivered. If you’re searching for a fresh take on classic fantasy tropes, especially with compelling Christian elements woven into the narrative, then buckle up!

What Makes Divine Summons a Must-Read?

This isn’t your average fantasy story. Minor takes familiar elements and infuses them with a unique spiritual depth. The narrative centers on Captain Vinyanel Ecleriast, an elven cavalry commander. His life takes an unexpected turn when he receives a divine summons from the deity Creo. His mission? To form an elite battalion of elven dragon riders to combat the escalating threat of the dragonkin and their demonic allies.

A Journey of Self-Discovery and Unexpected Partnerships

Vinyanel’s journey is far more than just martial training. As a skilled warrior, he soon discovers he needs as much spiritual guidance as he does combat prowess. This leads him under the tutelage of a fascinating half-elf prophetess. Their dynamic is a highlight, evolving from initial bickering to a truly compelling partnership as they navigate the perilous path ahead.

One of my favorite aspects was the developing bond between Vinyanel and his magnificent silver dragon. Their relationship quickly blossoms into a genuine friendship, adding a heartfelt layer to the action-packed plot.

Immersive World-Building and Gripping Pacing

Minor is a master of world-building. Her descriptions create a sense of familiarity while simultaneously feeling fresh and new, drawing you effortlessly into the elven realm without ever overwhelming you with exposition. The rich history of conflict between the elves and their enemies is conveyed brilliantly, not through tedious explanations, but by allowing us to experience its repercussions through the eyes of well-developed and believable characters.

The pacing is excellent, keeping you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning. The story moves at a quick, urgent clip, ensuring there’s never a dull moment.

A Nod to Classic High Fantasy (and a Couple Minor Quibbles)

The writing style itself has a charmingly “older” high fantasy feel with its distinct phrasing and language. I found this to be a delightful throwback, adding to the book’s unique charm.

While my overall experience was overwhelmingly positive, I did have a couple of minor observations. I found the elves a bit slow to uncover some rather obvious clues regarding a spy within their capital – it felt apparent to me earlier than it did for them. Also, it wasn’t until late in the book that I realized Divine Summons serves as an origin story for a character in Minor’s broader “Risen Age” series. This didn’t diminish my enjoyment at all, but it’s a helpful heads-up for readers who might be following her other works.

Why You Need to Read Divine Summons

Divine Summons propels Vinyanel into a realm where a sword and shield simply aren’t enough. It’s a profound journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth, where he must look beyond his own abilities to find the strength to answer his divine summons.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who loves a well-crafted fantasy story with believable characters, engaging world-building, and a compelling hint of divine intervention. It’s truly a soaring start to what promises to be an epic tale!
