Curse Bearer: A Fantasy Journey Where Power Has a Cost
Here is my review of Curse Bearer by Rebecca P. Minor, the first book in The Risen Age Archive. If you enjoy fantasy with a strong sense of place and a faith-affirming take on magic, this one is worth a look. I came away with plenty to say about it, so let’s dive in.
What Is Curse Bearer About?
Danae Baledric flees her homeland in search of a cure for a degenerative malady that’s killing her father. She never expects the journey to teach her the price of her own ignorance. On a trek across foreign lands, Danae learns that beyond her own struggle, an eternal war rages, a conflict that claims its victims one soul at a time.
Her magical dabbling has spurred a hunt for her, and that power, even employed in ignorance, has a cost. An epic tale of curses and miracles, where headstrong ignorance creates bondage, and the desire to serve offers freedom.
A Well-Built World You Can Walk Into
Minor’s landscape, weather, and terrain descriptions are so wonderful. It really gives you a sense of place without slowing down the story too much. This is a well constructed and well described world, and you feel like you’re truly in it.
Danae and the Heart of the Story
How can you just not fall in love with Danae? I love her spunk and her fireplug “I can do this all day” attitude. Her affection for her father is beautiful and touching.
Pacing, Surprises, and That Ending
The story is interesting and had some surprises along the way. I really can’t say more without spoilers and you want to experience this story for yourself. It sags just a bit in the middle, and I found some of the travel scenes lasted longer than I expected.
The climax and ending were really cool.
Magic Handled With Care
Magic can be a contentious subject for Christians writing speculative fiction. Minor handled this in a creative and faith affirming way.
Who Would Enjoy Curse Bearer?
Readers who love fantasy with rich, immersive settings and a headstrong heroine they can root for. It should also appeal to readers of Christian fantasy who want to see magic approached thoughtfully rather than avoided. If you don’t mind a few longer stretches of travel along the way, I think you’ll find a lot to enjoy.
Should You Read Curse Bearer?
I recommend Curse Bearer to fans of fantasy who appreciate a vivid world, a character with real spirit, and a creative, faith-affirming approach to magic. It is a strong start to The Risen Age Archive.
