How to change your Twitter username

Twitter is a fantastic app for connecting with people. I love the asynchronous nature of the relationships. You can follow people who don’t follow you and people can follow you that you don’t follow.

Over time, our online identity can change. I used to be @TedtheThird on Twitter back when I had a similar domain name. When I lost that domain, the @TedtheThird handle didn’t make as much sense anymore.

Before I was @TedtheThird, I used the name of my favorite game character for my Twitter handle. When I wanted to branch out to other interests games, I wanted a new handle, but I didn’t want to lose all my followers.

If you find yourself needing to change your Twitter handle, you’re in luck. Its the subject of today’s step by step guide.

Step by step guide

Open Twitter and login. By the Tweet button (on Windows), you’ll see your avatar. This is the picture you chose to represent yourself on Twitter. If you put the mouse over the picture, you’ll see the words Profile and settings.

Click on your picture with the left mouse button. You’ll see a long menu appear.

Click on Settings and Privacy. This will load your account page. Look for Username.

Click in the box with your username and change it. Twitter will let you know if the new one is available.

Or not.

If your new name is availble, you’ll see Available and the twitter.com address below will change to green as well.

Once you change it to a new name, and you see Available, scroll down the page until you see Save changes.
